Traditional Stovetop Espresso Maker Review
Overall Rating (based on customer reviews): 4.6 out of 5 stars
This is the most popular type of stovetop espresso makers. Made in Italy from polished aluminum, it comes in several sizes (for example, 3-cup or 6-cup). Some people say that this is the only way to make coffee, and it certainly makes a powerful brew. Although called an espresso maker, it is not really, because the coffee is not produced under pressure. In Italy, it is called a Moka. Almost every family in Italy owns at least one of these pots (in fact, you will find them pretty much all over the Meditarranean countries, including Spain and Andorra).
To get the best flavor, you should never wash it with detergent or in a dishwasher. The aluminum is slightly porous, and so chemical flavors will taint the coffee. A run in the dishwasher will also take the nice shine off the pot. After a few brews, you will find that the pot gets nicely seasoned, and the brew gets better and better! Always rinse in clean water, and always use filtered water for your coffee. If you haven’t used the pot for a couple of weeks, than you may want to make a weak brew to discard.
The stovetop brewer is made of durable polished aluminum in a unique octagon shape and makes 6 2-ounce cups of espresso in just 4 to 5 minutes. It has a flip-up top and side-pour spout provide added convenience, and measures 4-1/4 by 8 inches
This coffee maker will last forever, and you will still be brewing fantastic coffee with it into your retirement.
Some people do not like this coffee pot, not because it makes bad coffee (it makes excellent coffee!), but because it is made from Aluminum. Apparently, there can be some health concerns related to using aluminum cooking equipment. If this is an issue for you, you may want to consider buying the stainless steel version – equally long lasting, makes superb coffee, looks stylish, and has none of the potential health issues. In addition, you can use it in the dishwasher.
